ACROSS Africa the illegal slaughter of elephants is accelerating at such a pace—recent estimates put the number killed at 100,000 in just three years—that it threatens to exterminate whole populations.

The illegal wildlife trade is one of the biggest threats to the survival of some of the world’s most threatened species. In fact it’s second only to habitat destruction as a cause of loss for many species. Illegal wildlife trade is one of the most lucrative international crimes, worth about £6bn per year.

It's the fifth largest global illegal trade after drugs, counterfeting, human trafficking and oil.
