Elephants Campaign
Get Involved!

Elephants are increasingly endangered by a growing human incursion into their habitats. Poaching has drastically exacerbated the plight of the African elephant in particular. “A Voice for Elephants” is a resource for information, a forum for discussion, and a rally point for those who want to get involved.

To save elephants, we must identify and fund efficient actions that address the supply, trafficking and demand for ivory.

The analysis of various subsets of ETIS data could lead to the production of reports that include the following information:

  •  Mapping illegal trade routes, and the evolution of the changes to the routes to take advantage of fluctuations in enforcement effort;

  •  Trends in smuggling methods by geographic region and trade route;

  •  Profiling of illegal traders and smugglers;

  •  Geographic reports and mapping of smuggling trends;

  •  Risk assessments by country to assist in targeting of illegal trade;

  •  Revision and circulation of reports to enforcement officials internationally, as new information is compiled and analysed;

  •  Early warning system for emerging trends and new risks as they are identified, for a rapid response to illegal trade in elephant products; and

  •  Recommendations for improving enforcement efforts at tackling illegal trade in elephant products and where resources should be targeted at the national, regional and international levels.

The overall goal of MIKE is to provide information needed for elephant range States to make appropriate management and enforcement decisions, and to build institutional capacity within the range States for the long-term management of their elephant populations.

More specific objectives within this goal are:

a) to measure levels and trends in the illegal hunting of elephants;

b) to determine changes in these trends over time; and

c) to determine the factors causing or associated with such changes, and to try and assess in particular to what extent observed trends are a result of any decisions taken by the Conference of the Parties to CITES.
